NFC

NFC - Near Field Communications

Near Field Communications or NFC is one of those terms that you'll probably start hearing a lot more of shortly, but what's it all about - and what does it mean for the construction industry?

NFC is a wireless technology designed to enable communications between two devices. NFC is designed to communicate over very short distances and is currently in the news because of rumours that Apple will be including the technology in the future releases of the iPhone. Google is including the technology in Android and Samsung has also included it in some of their mobile phone handsets.

In terms of its impact on the construction industry, NFC will allow operators to register their presence at a particular location by simply presenting their NFC enabled device (mobile phone for example) to a fixed tag (touch and go) thus eliminating the need for expensive readers and cards.

A variation on this theme is for operatives to carry tags and to take them to an NFC enabled phone held by a supervisor (tag to phone) to register their presence.

The technology was originally designed for electronic purse applications but as with most new technologies, the possibilities are endless.

If you would like to take part in a joint NFC development programme then please call us on 0843 21 200 20 for more details.
