Access Control Cards & Card Access Systems

In their simplest form access control cards are credentials used to gain access to a secure area protected by a card access control system.  Access cards use many different technologies, i.e. barcode, magnetic stripe, proximity and smart cards and a single card can combine a number of these technologies.  

The card is just one component of an access control system and is used to identify the holder to the system.

The access card holds a number that is read by the card reader and this number is then sent to the access control system, in this case GaneEntry.  The system decides whether or not the card is valid at the reader and will take the appropriate action, i.e. allow or deny access through the control point to the individual.  With the GaneEntry system all attempts to gain access to a secure area, whether valid or not, are audited and this information is stored for later retrieval.  Reports and enquiries showing who entered what controlled access point and at what time can then be generated.

The GaneEntry card access systems include the facility for the user to design and print their own access cards which means that they can be used for visual identification of a person and for proving that the person has authority to be in a particular area or zone.

Access cards are usually the same size and shape as a credit card and can be supplied as either a blank plain white card or pre-printed to the user?s requirements.  Key fobs are also available and in certain circumstances can be more convenient than cards but cannot be printed with the holder?s details and therefore do not permit for a visual check of the holder to be made.

In addition to card access systems, access control cards can be used for a number of different applications including cashless vending, club membership and travel ticketing to name but a few.  This especially applies to smart cards which can store data on a chip embedded in the cards

How does it work?

The system is compatible with many different reader technologies, including Biometrics, and, using our own custom designed Intelligent Controllers, GaneEntry can control everything from office doors to turnstiles to vehicle barriers, in any combination.  It is also possible to use different reader technologies in any combination, making GaneEntry incredibly flexible.

Access permissions can be set at group level or by indivdual employee if necessary and the system also supports timed access control, so it's possible to determine access by the time of day too.

If installed as a module of GaneTime, then GaneEntry can also be configured to pass the information on for Time & Attendance calculations.
